EARS TO HEAR
'Speak, LORD; for Thy servant heareth.'
Our bodies were miraculously made, in that, they are so adaptable. Consider how, with increased work, the muscles grow to accommodate the need for strength. How the skin thickens on the fingertips of a guitarist to prevent the strings from cutting his fingers to shreds when he plays. This adaptivity works both ways, even with our emotions.
Jesus often used a strange phrase before sharing a lesson. He would say, “He that hath an ear, let him hear.” He would stress the importance of hearing Him by encouraging us to listen carefully to what He said, because the full benefit to be gained from His words was only known through understanding and applying! He would not have used such a profound statement to someone without ears, or someone born without the ability to hear.
As we attend church, read our Bibles, or even practice daily prayer, we run the danger of forming callouses rather than character! Jesus taught the simple method of education, to offer the opportunity for fallen man to attain the character of God! Words with such great potential, also carry a critical risk; the risks of callouses rather than character.
Next time you are confused with something life throws your way, read a Scripture you can't understand, or if you feel your prayers are stopping at the ceiling; pause and ask, “LORD, what am I missing?” Open my spiritual ears that I may truly hear Your gentle Voice. Don't let my ears become dull. Don't let my heart become calloused. 'Speak, LORD; for Thy servant heareth.'
