If we truly believe that we are saved by Grace, and not by works, then we must admit that good enough will never be good enough. Only total redemption and conversion will suffice. We readily admit that only God's great Grace, and Forgiveness, could ever make us acceptable, yet we still like to appease our natural man by highlighting our stronger suits of character. God tells us plainly that our best efforts are still the fruit of the rebellious, disgusting, fallen nature. He has made provision for us to stop consciously doing, and to begin a new existence of being. This new existence, in its new environment, will effortlessly transform our doing!
The only requirements demanded (not suggested) of the newly born-again child of God, is separation from the old, now inappropriate, things pertaining to the flesh and its lusts. This conversion, as drastic and difficult as it appears, has already been provided for, but it must be received, and practiced by the same Faith that brought about the New Birth! Many assume upon their faith for the new birth, but never see evidence of that same faith in a new lifestyle. To such believers there is no concrete security of their salvation, only a dogmatic, religious determination that deceives many to eternal destruction.
How can I be sure? It's simple, yet uncomfortable to the flesh. Stop trying to do what only the Holy Spirit can do and let Him do it! Ours is but to seek and submit. Seeking takes time and effort, and submission is repulsive to our flesh. This is the narrow road Jesus described.
Oh Lord, don't let me be deceived! The deception of false security is so subtle, and so extremely dangerous. Draw me to You, expose to me my sinfulness, and let me see it in the overwhelming Light of Your righteousness. Once I see my sin as You see it, and only after I've seen it as You do, will I see my need for a Savior. And, only after surrendering to my Savior, will I find freedom from my past, and a pathway to Your Kingdom.
