Clinging implies passion. Man was born to cling, whether it be to tangible things, or things of the heart; whether love, dignity, property, or life itself. Since the industrial revolution man has been overwhelmed with things to need. Life has been manipulated by the world to the point that we think we need things today that didn't even exist a few years ago. Jesus said there are very few needs, and that if we'd trust Him, He will surely supply them for us.
If we could see the focus our enemy has for our harm, we would naturally cling tightly to the hope and security we have in Christ. When Paul was at his worst, Jesus said that was when He could work most effectively in Paul's life! We don't care for such thoughts, yet reality tells us that good things happen to bad people, and bad things happen to good people, and the difference is determined by what we cling to when they happen.
Finally, consider a little puppy rescued from the cruelty of a puppy-mill, snatched up from certain death, and the apparent separation anxiety that puppy develops as it falls helplessly in love with its new person. Likewise, when a broken person experiences the gentle, personal touch of Jesus, and looks back across the tattered ruins of their life, they too want to cling to this newfound Savior for dear Life! Finally, safety and worth! By clinging to Him, nothing can ever separate me again from the Love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
“So, I'll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down. I will cling to the old rugged cross and exchange it some day for a crown.” *

For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
~Romans 8:38-39 KJV
Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
~Matthew 6:8 KJV
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
~Philippians 4:19 KJV
And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
~2 Corinthians 12:9 KJV
*The Old Rugged Cross” ~George Bennard (1912)
